CV Professional Statement

Crafting an effective summary at the top of your CV is crucial, as it's the first thing a hiring manager will read. Often, people struggle with making this section too lengthy and vague, filled with generic phrases. What you need is a succinct summary that showcases the best of you, making you proud to present it. Aim for no more than 90 impactful words.

Here are some key tips to refine your professional statement:

  1. Write your professional statement last: Complete the rest of your CV first, then use a highlighter to emphasize the standout points that best represent your strongest and most relevant capabilities and achievements.

  2. Title it “Professional Statement”: This subtly reinforces to the hiring manager that you are focusing on your professional attributes.

  3. Clarify your Professional Identity: Go beyond just your job title. Define yourself with a few words that encapsulate your professional essence. For instance, instead of saying you're "highly experienced," specify like this: “Qualified Competency Interview Assessor and Coaching Leader with over 25 years’ experience.”

  4. Effective introductions for your key attributes: Consider starting your points with phrases like, "Particularly proud of, With a commitment to, Have a sound reputation for, Established track record of, Proficient at"

  5. Use the first person: Avoid third-person narratives since it’s clear that you write your own CV. First-person is more direct and personal.

  6. Include scale and perspective: Mention the scope of your responsibilities and achievements (size, volume, value, geographic locations) to give a clearer picture of your impact.

  7. Dual-purpose your statement: Once refined, your professional statement can also enhance your LinkedIn profile.

  8. Consider AI assistance: For a polished final version, run your statement through an AI tool to ensure clarity and impact. Ensure the AI receives all necessary information but retains your personal voice.

By focusing on these elements, you'll create a compelling and succinct professional statement that captures the essence of your professional identity and capabilities.
