From managing help desks and hundreds of employees to the recruitment processes of global companies, for Jo, her lightbulb moment came when she ventured into the world of becoming a qualified assessor about 25 years ago.
Having cut her teeth in the corporate world, the turning point for Jo came when she got to grips with a redeployment programme - set up by her employer to support ‘misplaced’ employees during business acquisitions where established teams merged resulting in job duplication.
“Hundreds of people were displaced from their jobs every year,” explains Jo. “This is when placement took on a new meaning for me. People were understandably really angry, really upset and well, lost when this situation occurred. And while the decision of a new business acquisition was never a personal one, the knock-on effects of any big personnel decision were, of course, very personal.
“It was through this process that I truly realised just how engrained in our purpose and drive our job roles. And that when it is taken away, it can feel very personal. It was at this point things shifted for me.”
Moving on from her employer to become a qualified assessor, Jo honed her focus and, pulling on her decades of knowledge, built Vale Career Consulting.
